More to Anthony Davis not wanting JJ Redick as Lakers coach?

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Anthony Davis would prefer the Lakers hire Pelicans assistant James Borrego over JJ Redick as the successor to Darvin Ham.

Stein cited the relationship between Borrego and Davis, which dates back to the latter's time in New Orleans, as the reason for the Lakers star to choose Borrego over Redick.

However, is there an underlying reason for Davis not wanting Redick as Lakers coach?

When the NBA released the voter ballots for this year's awards/honors, it was revealed Redick, an analyst for ESPN, did not vote Davis into either of the All-Defensive teams. Instead, he voted for Bam Adebayo, Victor Wembanyama, Rudy Gobert, Alex Caruso and Herb Jones in his first team, and Jarrett Allen, Jalen Suggs, Derrick White, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the second.

The omission of Davis was particularly glaring since the Lakers star finished with a better Defensive Rating than Allen, Suggs, SGA and White — an impressive feat on a relatively bad defensive unit. Through the season, many argued that Davis singlehandedly anchored the Lakers' defense to keep them in the playoff hunt, with some even making a case for him to win Defensive Player of the Year.

In fact, Davis himself was miffed when he didn't make the cut as a finalist for the award. "They're not giving it to me. The league doesn't like me," Davis told ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

Regardless of Redick's omission, Davis made the All-Defensive first team next to Adebayo, Gobert, Wembanyama, and Jones.

The question beckons: could Davis be holding a grudge with Redick?

Things could get very interesting if Redick is named Ham's successor. According to Shams Charania, the Lakers are "zeroing in" on hiring Redick and could wait until the end of the 2024 NBA Finals to make the announcement. Redick will be on the ABC airwaves calling the seven-game series that concludes no later than June 23 with a possible Game 7.

However, Davis may not have to worry about sharing a locker room with Redick. It was reported Thursday morning by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that the Lakers were preparing contract offer for UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley.
