Multi-Time Lakers Champion Forward Offered Head Coach Position
USA TODAY Sports

When looking at this position-less era of basketball, I can't help but think how much someone like Lamar Odom would have benefited from landing in the NBA just a couple years further down the line. He was the definition of a playmaking/point forward during his best seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and he was a huge reason as to why the purple and gold won back to back championships in 2009 and 2010.

Odom had a special relationship with the city of Los Angeles and even though he didn't have a beautiful exit with the franchise, he was ultra-close with the late, great Kobe Bryant and has been able to overcome all of the obstacles in his personal life. The retired forward is still involved with the basketball community and he pops out to as many events as he can.

And now it looks like the 43-year-old champion has been offered a head coaching position by a high school in New York and he just may use that opportunity to build a portfolio that will draw the attention of top collegiate coaching staffs in the state of California.

"TMZ Sports reported a New York high school, Redemption Christian Academy, has offered Odom its head-coaching position, and he's considering taking the offer as he attempts to build a resume for a move to college hoops. Odom and the school have been in contact recently regarding the job, which was formally offered to him for the 2023-24 season. The 2011 NBA Sixth Man of the Year briefly attended Redemption during his high school career before transferring to St. Thomas Aquinas in Connecticut."

When Odom was still in the NBA, he possessed a basketball IQ that not many of his competitors did. It's not easy to suit up as a starter for one of the biggest markets in the world for multiple seasons but he did so and became a huge factor in the process.

Odom logged 14 total seasons in his career for four different organizations and his most productive campaign came in 2003 with the Miami Heat when he averaged 17 points and four assists. Let's see if he gets another shot as a coach at a lower level!
