As free agency gets closer for the New York Knicks, Bleacher Report recently named De’Anthony Melton as their dream free agent.
It was a frustrating end to the season for the New York Knicks, as injuries ended up becoming too much for them to overcome. After losing to the Indiana Pacers in seven games, the Knicks will now be trying to figure out what’s the next step this offseason to help them win a championship.
With some money to spend and a ton of first-round draft picks, the Knicks can make a big splash this offseason, as the franchise has been very patient. With that being said, Bleacher Report recently named Philadelphia 76ers guard De’Anthony Melton as a dream free-agent target for the New York Knicks. Here’s what they had to say about him.
Melton would fit on the Knicks as a backup point/shooting guard behind Jalen Brunson, helping keep the regular-season workload low for the All-Star starter. The Knicks are projected to have the $12.9 million non-taxpayer MLE, which may be enough to land Melton as an unrestricted free agent.
Melton would certainly be a nice addition to the Knicks, as he checks many of the boxes that the team has been looking for. Melton is a good 3-point shooter and can run the offense off the bench, something they were lacking at times.
Finding a true backup guard for Brunson will be important this offseason, as he had to shoulder a lot of the load as the primary ball handler. While Miles McBride emerged this season, he was much better playing off-ball.
Last season, Melton averaged 11.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. These are all solid numbers for a guard coming off the bench, and he will likely be sought after as a free agent.
It will be interesting for the New York Knicks to see their plan this offseason. Likely, they will try to pursue a star first and foremost. However, adding solid role players like Melton makes sense if that doesn’t pan out.
