The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors during their showdown at Chase Center on Thursday night. Donovan Mitchell recorded 25 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals to help the Cavs secure a 118-111 victory.
Max Strus added 24 points, while James Harden tallied 19 points and five assists for Cleveland. Cavs center Jarrett Allen dominated the glass with 13 rebounds, to go along with his 16 points.
Brandin Podziemski and Gui Santos combined for 50 points for the Warriors in the absence of Steph Curry, who could be back on Sunday after missing 27 straight contests. Kristaps Porzingis added 16 points and seven rebounds in his return from a one-game absence.
While the Dubs trailed by as many as 14 points, they were able to make it a close game in the closing stages. In fact, Golden State was up 103-100 with under five minutes remaining.
However, there was an incorrect non-call in the final two minutes of the showdown that allowed the Dubs to stay within striking distance after the Cavaliers took the lead again.
With around 1:52 remaining on the clock, forward Draymond Green entered the painted area as Podziemski tried to attack the basket. When the Warriors guard passed the ball to Santos at the 3-point line, Green stayed inside the paint and never stepped out until Podziemski drove to the rim for a tough layup.
According to the NBA's Last Two Minute Report, Green should have been called for a three-second violation. Had it been called, the Cavs would have gotten possession and kept their 110-105 lead at the time.
The good news is the Cavaliers were still able to come out on top. Cleveland improved to 48-29 on the season with the win, keeping them in the top four in the East.
As for the Warriors, they dropped to 36-41, staying at No. 10 in the West. They have also lost three straight games.
