NBA announces no games will take place on Election Day, plan to 'focus on promoting nonpartisan civic engagement'

The full NBA 2022-2023 regular season schedule will be revealed at 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

The move is a significant shift from previous election days, where, aside from 2020 when the season didn't start until December due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there have always been games taking place. During the 2018 midterms, there were four games in play, during the 2016 general election there were six games on the docket, the 2014 midterms saw eight contests and the 2012 general election had three games on the schedule.

In a statement, the NBA said the following:

"Over the next few months, teams will distribute information on their state's voting process and voter registration deadlines and are encouraging everyone to communicate this information with families and friends to ensure they all have a plan. On Monday, November 7th, the league will use the platform of games played to amplify the work of each team to promote civic engagement in their respective markets and share important voting resources from our partners."
