After missing the playoffs last season after trading away star point guard De’Aaron Fox at the trade deadline, many around the NBA expected the Sacramento Kings to begin a rebuild this offseason.

Instead, the Kings elected to keep their current core of Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine together and they also made some key additions to their roster this offseason as they try to fight for a playoff spot in the loaded Western Conference this season.

Sacramento began their offseason by selecting Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud in the 2025 NBA Draft and they then landed Dennis Schroder in free agency via a sign-and-trade with the Detroit Pistons to fill their void at the starting point guard position.

By making these moves, Sacramento is looking to compete for a playoff spot in the West this season, though that may be tough for them to do with the number of talented teams in the conference.

NBA Executives View Kings as Potential Seller Ahead of Trade Deadline

Because of this, the Kings could end up being a major seller ahead of the trade deadline if they have a slow start to the season like they did last season.

According to Forbes’ Evan Sidery, this is what many NBA executives believe could end up being the case as he reported that league executives project the Kings as one of the most likely teams to blow it up this season.

Sidery also mentioned that with their win-now players of Sabonis, DeRozan, LaVine and Malik Monk that they could become a top seller this season if they have a slow start with Sabonis being viewed as the player with the most trade value.

Of course, the Kings’ core has been in trade rumors all offseason, especially Monk as the Kings were trying to move him this summer after he put together arguably the best season of his career last year.

Despite the trade rumors, Sacramento is set on trying to compete for a playoff spot with their current roster, though a slow start to the season could see them opt to begin a rebuild.

If that is the case, Sabonis is likely the player that will draw the most attention ahead of the trade deadline as Sacramento could acquire a large trade package in a deal involving him.

For LaVine and DeRozan, they may be harder to move in a trade due to their contracts, likely reminiscent of their days with the Chicago Bulls where it took multiple seasons for them to find a trade partner for them.

While that may be the case, teams around the NBA could be intrigued by many players on the Kings’ roster if they decide to overhaul their roster this season, which seems to be a possibility if they struggle again this season.
