The Philadelphia 76ers were plagued by injuries last year. Many of their starters suffered season-ending injuries throughout the course of the year, causing them to miss most of the season. Star player Joel Embiid was one of those players. His injuries continued a concerning trend. The big man simply cannot stay on the court. Fans were hopeful that the former third overall pick could get everything right in the offseason and help this team make one more run in the postseason. Unfortunately, one NBA insider gave a concerning update on Embiid’s health, putting next year already in doubt.
The Philadelphia 76ers had some rotten injury luck last year. While Joel Embiid has been injured before, the rest of the team suffered injury after injury. A few months into the season, the year felt lost due to the number of players they had to replace. The hope was that with a summer to get healthy and the number three overall pick, the team could get back into the conversation in the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, Embiid’s health may still be a question mark. The Athletic’s Tony Jones reported that the seven-time All-Star hasn’t resumed basketball activities.
“League sources tell The Athletic that Embiid still hasn’t returned to on-court basketball activities. That said, Morey and the front office remain optimistic that Embiid will be on the floor for the season opener.”
The optimism is appreciated, but doesn’t seem to line up with the reality of the situation. If Joel Embiid hasn’t even gotten back on the court yet, he is miles away from being able to play in an NBA game. While the 76ers have plenty of talent on the roster, Embiid is a key player. We’ve seen what he can do when healthy, but many have started to question whether we will ever see that player again.
The Eastern Conference is wide open next year. Indiana and Boston have star players out for the entire year with Achilles injuries. Milwaukee has question marks with their new pieces, and Detroit still hasn’t proven they are ready for a deep playoff run. Cleveland and New York are the clear favorites, but they have major question marks of their own. If the Philadelphia 76ers can get everyone healthy, they could make some noise in the conference. That is a big if with Embiid.
