NBA legend Paul Pierce laments lack of defense in the NBA

Paul Pierce wants to see more defense being played in the NBA. On Friday, Luka Doncic scored 73 points against the Atlanta Hawks in a 148-143 win. Just five days earlier, Joel Embiid had dropped 70 against the San Antonio Spurs. The two big scoring nights have created a dialogue among NBA fans, with many believing defense is being ushered out of the game.

After Doncic's stellar performance, Pierce, a former NBA Champion, shared his thoughts to X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Damn I miss Defense in the NBA," Pierce wrote.

While it's fair to assume that teams are playing more relaxed defense in the modern game, it's also worth discussing the level of talent that currently resides in the league. Players are more skilled now. They're more athletic. The majority of the league can shoot the three. Sports science departments have players operating at a higher level.

It's unfair to assume that higher-scoring games are purely down to a lack of defense. Everything evolves. The NBA is based on spacing now. There are more ways to attack the basket. Scoring opportunities are carved open at every spot on the floor. We're a long way from the days of everyone playing inside the paint and looking to pressure the rim.

With a rise in pace, skill and athleticism, it makes sense that players are scoring more points now. There's more room to operate. Their skill sets allow for a variety of shots.

Of course, the NBA's rules allow for the more offensive-based games. It's what draws the casual fans. It's what creates highlights that go viral on social media.

It's highly unlikely that we're going to see a dramatic shift in how the NBA game is played in terms of offense. As such, we're likely waiting on teams to catch up defensively. Until then, we will continue to see incredible feats of scoring. Not because defenses are lazy or unskilled but because the offensive talent is at a point we've never seen before, and that's good for the NBA and its fans.
