Steve Nash’s name is cemented among the NBA’s all-time greats. The Canadian guard was drafted 15th overall by the Phoenix Suns in 1996 and went on to redefine the point guard position with his court vision, passing, and precision shooting. Nash won back-to-back MVP awards in 2005 and 2006, earned eight All-Star selections, and was the centerpiece of the Suns’ famed “Seven Seconds or Less” era.
He also made multiple All-NBA teams and ended his career with 10,335 assists, the fifth most in NBA history. After drawing the curtain on an iconic career in 2015, Nash was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018, securing his legacy as one of the game’s brightest minds and most skilled floor generals.
Following his retirement, Nash transitioned into coaching, most notably serving as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2020 to 2022. His tenure included playoff runs with Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden but ended after two turbulent seasons.
Following a brief hiatus from the NBA, Nash is returning to the franchise where he built his legacy. On Monday, Suns owner Mat Ishbia confirmed on X that Nash will join Phoenix as a senior advisor, praising his grit, toughness, and winning mentality.
“Steve Nash was an amazing player and exactly what the Phoenix Suns are all about,” Ishbia wrote. “His grit, toughness, and winning mentality have defined our organization in the past, and I’m so excited to share that Steve is formally joining the @Suns as a senior advisor and will help us define our future for years to come!”

In his role, Nash will provide strategic input to the front office, mentor young players, and assist new head coach Jordan Ott in shaping team culture. The appointment comes as Phoenix looks to rebound from a disappointing 2024-25 campaign that saw the team miss the playoffs despite boasting an expensive roster.
The Suns parted ways with Durant and Bradley Beal and are entering a new phase built around Devin Booker, Jalen Green, and emerging talent. By bringing Nash back, the Suns hope to inject valuable basketball knowledge and leadership into a franchise aiming to restore its status as a contender.
For Nash, The role represents a homecoming to the franchise where he achieved his greatest success, and the move signals the Suns’ desire to take the next step in restoring the franchise to contention. The 2025-26 season will feature a younger roster led by Booker, and Nash’s presence is expected to provide some form of mentorship.
