Coinciding with the NBA Playoffs, the league is now handing out its regular season awards over the next week or so. On Wednesday, the NBA announced that Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard had won the 2025 Sixth Man of the Year award.

Pritchard is the fourth Celtic in franchise history to win the award. He now shares the honor with ex-teammate Malcolm Brogdon, who won it two years prior; Bill Walton, who won in 1986; and Kevin McHale, who won in 1984 and 1985.

This also marks the fifth time a Celtic has taken home the award since its conception in 1983. As impressive as that feat is, the Celtics are not alone in achieving it.

The NBA's official history account revealed that following Pritchard's victory, the Celtics are now tied with the Los Angeles Clippers for the most Sixth Man of the Year winners with five in total.

The Clippers' five winners include Montrezl Harrell, who won in 2020; Lou Williams, who won in 2018 and 2019; and Jamal Crawford, who won in 2014 and 2016. Though the two franchises are tied in terms of the number of Sixth Man of the Year awards in their names, the Celtics technically have more recipients with four.

On the record, the Celtics have taken home the honor five times. However, the Celtics introduced the strategy of having a sixth man in the NBA. Frank Ramsey, whose number is retired with the franchise, was considered the league's first Sixth Man.

Following his retirement, John Havlicek took the mantle, and like Ramsey, his role as such played a hand in multiple titles. Havlicek may have had more success once he became a starter, but he was so good in his role that the award was named after him in 2022.
