Kevin Durant faced off against the Phoenix Suns for the first time on Friday night since his blockbuster trade to the Houston Rockets during the offseason. The former NBA MVP led the Rockets to a convincing 117-98 victory against a shorthanded Phoenix side that did not have the services of the injured Devin Booker.

Durant finished with 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting, to go along with four rebounds, eight assists, three steals and a block, while also knocking down two triples in 32 minutes of action. The 15-time All-Star made history on Friday night by scoring his 31,000th career point. However, that wasn’t the only bit of history that was rewritten during the game.

Durant, who joined the Rockets in the offseason following a two-and-a-half-year stint in Phoenix, became just the eighth player in NBA history to amass 31,000 points in his career . He is now closing in on Wilt Chamberlain, who is No. 7 on the all-time scoring list with 31,419 points.

Apart from the scoring milestone, Durant also climbed the NBA’s leaderboards for career three-pointers made. The 37-year-old now has 2,223 triples to his name, which is 12th all-time. The league took to social media to congratulate Durant for his historic feat.

“Congrats to Kevin Durant of the @HoustonRockets for moving into 12th on the all-time THREE-POINTERS MADE list!” the NBA posted on X.

Durant is in the midst of another big year. In 18 games played this season, the 15-time All-Star is averaging 25.2 points on 50.2% shooting, 5.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.8 triples in 35.5 minutes per contest.

Thanks in large part to Durant’s continued dominance, the Rockets have emerged as one of the best teams in the Western Conference. They improved to 15-5 after Friday’s victory and are No. 2 in the West behind the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are 21-1.

Durant will get an opportunity to add to his tally on Saturday, with the Rockets playing twice in two nights. They will be on the road against Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks, with tip-off from American Airlines Center scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET.
