NBA Notes: Clippers, John Collins, Lakers, Christian Koloko, Suns

The Clippers have added a dose of athleticism and size by acquiring power forward John Collins from the Jazz, giving L.A. the type of traditional frontcourt presence it’s lacked in recent seasons.

“Sometimes you have to make a decision between getting a great athlete who may struggle shooting the ball from range, versus getting the really skilled player who just maybe is just an average functional athlete,” Clippers president Lawrence Frank said, via Law Murray of The Athletic. “John has shown the ability to be both, which is huge.”

Collins averaged 15.1 points and 8.5 rebounds last season and could fit nicely alongside stars Kawhi Leonard and James Harden as a finisher and rebounder.

Koloko Still in Limbo for Lakers

Big man Christian Koloko remains a restricted free agent and hasn’t yet accepted his two-way qualifying offer from the Lakers. Still, there’s no indication he plans to sign elsewhere.

Koloko was added to L.A.’s Summer League roster just ahead of Thursday’s opener in Las Vegas, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. The 7-footer made just 19 appearances last season due to health issues, but the Lakers retain matching rights should he receive another offer.

Suns Expected to Target Backcourt Help

If and when the Suns finalize a buyout with Bradley Beal, the team is expected to use the vacated roster spot on a point guard or combo guard, per Arizona Sports 98.7’s John Gambadoro. Phoenix has reportedly been active in exploring depth options in what has been a fairly turbulent offseason.

Beal is reportedly headed to the Clippers once the buyout is completed.
