The Hawks are giving big man Charles Bassey a shot at camp. The team announced his signing Wednesday, with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporting it’s an Exhibit 10 contract.
Bassey, 24, has dealt with a series of injuries in recent years, including a fractured patella in 2023 and a torn ACL last December. He still managed to appear in 36 games for the Spurs last season, averaging 4.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in limited minutes.
The former second-round pick did enough this summer to earn another look, putting up 15.3 points and 11.0 rebounds for the Celtics in Las Vegas while shooting better than 70% from the field.
He also reportedly drew interest from overseas power Partizan Belgrade before choosing to stick around the NBA.
Atlanta has only 11 players on guaranteed contracts, leaving the door open for someone like Bassey — or fellow camp hopefuls Caleb Houstan, Mouhamed Gueye, and N’Faly Dante — to push for a roster spot.
Clippers sign Freemantle: The Clippers announced the signing of Zach Freemantle, as expected. The former Xavier standout is also on an Exhibit 10 deal, per The Athletic.
Freemantle, 23, put up 16.8 points and 6.8 rebounds last season as a “super senior” in college, earning second-team All-Big East honors. He also turned heads at the Portsmouth Invitational and had a short stint with Orlando’s Summer League squad.
With the Clippers already full on standard and two-way deals, Freemantle is likely ticketed for G League duty in San Diego if he doesn’t stick with the main roster.
Celtics two-way talk: A panel at NBC Sports Boston identified Amari Williams as the two-way player to watch. The rookie big man, drafted 46th overall in June, has a clearer path to minutes than Boston’s other two-way options after the team lost key frontcourt depth this summer.
