The Nuggets have officially signed veteran wing Tim Hardaway Jr. to a one-year deal, the team announced Wednesday, adding another rotation option to a roster that has undergone significant changes this month.
Hardaway, 32, joins Denver on a veteran’s minimum contract after starting 77 games for the Pistons last season. He averaged 11.0 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists while shooting 36.8% from beyond the arc.
Known for his streaky shooting and quick trigger from deep, Hardaway is expected to slot into a second-unit role, though he could push for minutes at either wing spot depending on how the rotation shakes out.
The Nuggets have been one of the busiest teams of the offseason. They recently agreed to trade Michael Porter Jr. and a first-round pick to Brooklyn in exchange for forward Cam Johnson, reached a one-year deal with Bruce Brown, and landed veteran big man Jonas Valančiūnas in a separate deal with Sacramento.
The addition of Hardaway could prove to be a low-cost win if he’s able to return to the scoring form he showed during stretches of his time with Detroit and Dallas. According to cap expert Yossi Gozlan, the flurry of moves leaves Denver right at the edge of the luxury tax.
Meanwhile, Detroit’s decision to let Hardaway walk — amid gambling allegations against Malik Beasley and the loss of backup guard Dennis Schroder to Sacramento — leaves the Pistons somewhat scrambling. They’ve reached a deal with free agent Caris LeVert, but remain active in trying to shore up the wing position.
NBA Notes
The Clippers and second-round pick Kobe Sanders have agreed to a two-way contract, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. The Nevada standout averaged 15.8 points and 4.5 assists last season and joins Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Trentyn Flowers to fill all three of L.A.’s two-way slots.
The Wizards’ trade for Cam Whitmore from Houston is being viewed as a low-risk, high-reward swing. Per The Athletic, head coach Brian Keefe may lean on wing-heavy lineups next season as the Wizards continue to rebuild with an eye toward long-term development.
