Marvin Bagley III is back with the Wizards. Yes, again.
Washington is signing the 25-year-old big man to a one-year deal, per ESPN’s Shams Charania, in a move that makes positional sense following the trade of Kelly Olynyk. But it’s a curious one, considering the Wizards just traded Bagley to Memphis at the deadline in February.
Originally acquired by the Wizards in a package that included Isaiah Livers and a second-rounder, Bagley was then dealt again — part of a multi-team deal that landed Washington Marcus Smart and eventually the draft rights to Will Riley. He returns to D.C. now in what appears to be a low-risk reunion.
Bagley averaged 9.6 points and 5.8 rebounds across 43 appearances (16 starts) for Washington. He played just 12 games for the Grizzlies after the trade, contributing 3.6 points in limited minutes.
The big question now: Can he make the roster? The Wizards currently have 15 standard contracts on the books, plus Richaun Holmes (only $250K guaranteed) and Justin Champagnie (non-guaranteed). If Bagley’s deal is also non-guaranteed, he could be in a roster battle with both.
The Pelicans have secured one of their most important pieces for the foreseeable future.
Defensive standout Herb Jones has agreed to a three-year, $68 million extension, according to Charania. The new deal adds on to the end of Jones’ current contract and includes a player option for the 2029-30 season.
Jones, 25, has developed into a core part of New Orleans’ identity as a disruptive wing defender who averaged 10.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.6 steals this past season. Originally the 35th pick in the 2021 draft, Jones’ rise has been steady and respected across the league. He also connected on 41.8% of his threes in his last fully healthy season.
The full extension breakdown:
2027-28: $20.9M (140% raise)
2028-29: $22.5M
2029-30: $24.2M (player option)
Jones joins Zion Williamson and Trey Murphy III as key players under contract through at least 2027-28. The Pelicans now have lineup and financial flexibility, and a strong incentive to keep this core intact unless blown away by a trade offer.
The Raptors are bringing forward David Roddy to training camp on an Exhibit 10 contract, per Blake Murphy of Sportsnet.
Roddy, 24, was the 23rd overall pick in the 2022 draft by Memphis. He averaged 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds over 118 NBA games, but has bounced around in recent months, most recently as part of the record-setting seven-team trade centered on Kevin Durant. Roddy was briefly with the Hawks before being waived.
The Raptors’ camp roster is getting crowded. They’re currently sitting at 19 official signings, plus Exhibit 10 deals for Roddy, Tyson Degenhart and Clifford Omoruyi. That technically still leaves them within the offseason limit of 21.
Roddy will be competing for a spot on the Raptors 905 G League affiliate, where he can earn a bonus of up to $85,000 if he sticks for at least 60 days. He could also be a candidate for a two-way contract if the team shuffles pieces later this summer.
The only real cut decision looming? Toronto has 16 players on standard deals, and only 15 spots available come opening night. Expect one of Jamison Battle, Colin Castleton or A.J. Lawson (each on non-guaranteed deals) to be the odd man out.
