After finishing 14th in the East this season, the Detroit Pistons are dreaming of better days.

With 20-year-old Cade Cunningham as the key to a successful future, team GM Troy Weaver is expected to do whatever he can to pair the youngster with some star talent this summer.

His target is Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton, who will become a restricted free agent in a few months.

“While multiple sources identified the Detroit Pistons as a potential Sexton suitor — one of the few teams with cap space and a jumbo backcourt partner (Cade Cunningham) that can mask some of the size limitations — will any opposing team make a compelling enough offer sheet the Cavs would be unwilling to match?" wrote Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com. Remember, this is a guy who hasn’t played since November. Is any team offering him upwards of $20 million annually — a dollar figure sources say he could be seeking?”

The Cavs had a pretty solid season, all things considered. Despite some major injuries, they finished 9th in the East with a 44-38 record. Unfortunately, their season is over now after losing the play-in tournament.

Sexton, who missed a large chunk of time, had some pretty glaring issues getting along with teammates.

“Some of the veteran players resented Sexton and were upset the front office didn’t trade that pick in the middle of the 2017-18 season for one last shot at a title,” wrote Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com.

In Detroit, the emergence of Cunningham is everything. In his debut season, the Arlington native averaged 17.4 points, 5.6 assists, and 5.5 rebounds per game on 41.6% shooting.

As a tall and athletic guard, the thought is that he'd mix well with Sexton's particular set of size and talent.

It would be a huge move for the Pistons, that could get them closer to a seat in the playoffs. We'll just have to wait and see what they're able to pull off this summer.
