The Warriors will take their series against the Rockets back home on Saturday for Game 3, with the first-round battle tied, 1-1, after two games in Houston. While the focus for the pregame is on the health of forward Jimmy Butler, who is questionable after suffering a contusion on his backside in Game 2, the referees also continue to be storyline.
That's true of any playoff series, of course, but a series that has already devolved into two teams with open disdain for each other, as has been the case with Golden State and Houston, will especially lean on the refs to keep a measure of control.
On Saturday before the game, the NBA announced which referees will be on hand for the game. And one key official is getting special attention from fans of the Dubs.
That would be veteran ref James Williams, affectionately known as "Gucci" for his resemblance to rapper Gucci Mane. The Warriors have an interesting history with Williams, as pointed out by the Warriors Muse site, which posted to its 114,000 X followers: "Dubs get Gucci Mane for Game 3."
But the site also looked into the Warriors' history with Williams, and that's where things get interesting. Seems Golden State was winless in five games with Williams on hand though it should be pointed out that the Muse site was a bit off--the 0-5 was last year.
But, as the site noted, "Counterpoint: Warriors are 6-1 in the playoffs all time with Gucci ref."
Warriors are 0-5 this season with Gucci ref.

The lone playoff loss with Williams as a ref came in the 2022 NBA Finals against Boston, in which the Warriors eventually won the series but dropped the series opener.
All in all, then, the Williams-Warriors trend is a positive one, given the postseason success.
Exactly. Post season is not the regular season. Warriors favorable record with Gucci.
