In May, NBC announced that Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan would join the network as a special contributor for the 2025-26 season. Back then, many fans thought they’d get a regular peek into the mind of one of the greatest basketball geniuses.
However, the NBC-Jordan collaboration has not lived up to the hype. The network released just a prerecorded 105-minute interview with the NBA legend, and that was it for the season.
"Inside the NBA" analyst and NBA legend Charles Barkley called it an "embarrassment" for the network, as it didn’t deliver what the fans wanted. The new update about Jordan's future with NBC isn't that exciting, either.
NBC President Rick Cordella sat down with Front Office Sports on radio row at the Super Bowl. He was asked about the network’s plans with Jordan.
“Him joining our team as a special contributor back in the day, and we had this great interview with him, and the hope is we work more with him in the future,” replied Cordella
The reply doesn’t go into much depth, and it is unclear if Jordan's role will expand. It just indicates that the network has some plans with Jordan, but if it is just a single pretaped long-form interview, then it is likely going to draw more criticism.
On the other hand, a few days ago, NBC play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico argued that fans should appreciate anything coming from Jordan. According to Tirico, it is better to hear at least "something" from the NBA legend than "nothing at all."
Meanwhile, there is no doubt that some live-in-studio appearances and regular segments will draw more interest from fans.
