The Nets may put some of those draft assets to use, and could use one of their best players to land a top lottery pick.
The player could be Cam Johnson and the pick they may be eyeing is No. 2 overall and belongs to the Spurs. All of this is according to Brian Lewis of the New York Post.
Brooklyn currently holds the Nos. 8, 19, 26, and 27 picks in the first round, as well as the No. 36 overall.
“There is a sentiment around the league the Nets could look to land a second lottery pick by consolidating and packaging some combination of Johnson, those picks at the end of the first round and/or future draft capital,” Lewis wrote.
Meanwhile, Rutgers guard Dylan Harper is projected by many to be selected as the draft’s second-best prospect, behind only Duke’s Cooper Flagg. But the Spurs already have a dynamite backcourt in De’Aaron Fox and Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle. It’s hard to know where Harper would fit.
And most teams selecting at No. 2 want a player who is an immediate starter. That would not be Harper in San Antonio. In Brooklyn, however, things could be different.
While this is nothing more than speculation at this point, the Nets certainly have the draft capital to make such a move. And you’d think the Spurs would be open to moving down to No. 8, if a trade partner could sweeten the pot. A player such as Johnson would fit in well with San Antonio’s young core as well. And to get more picks on top of it?
Basically, if a deal between the Nets and Spurs isn’t being discussed yet, it should be. Both teams stand a chance to benefit and perhaps wildly.
