Nets’ Michael Porter Jr. likely done for season with hamstring injury

The Nets will be without their top scorer, possibly for the rest of the year.

Michael Porter Jr. has been diagnosed with a left hamstring strain and will be reevaluated in two to three weeks, the team announced. With the regular season ending April 12 and Brooklyn already eliminated, there’s little reason to rush anything. This likely shuts him down.

Porter, in his first season with the Nets, had been one of the few bright spots. He averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 52 games, all while posting efficient numbers across the board.

The timing is tough, but the situation is what it is. Porter had already been dealing with a right ankle sprain and appears to have suffered the hamstring issue while working his way back.

Brooklyn has struggled with or without him, but his absence removes a primary option offensively. The Nets are expected to lean more on younger forwards like Ziaire Williams and Josh Minott down the stretch.

Looking ahead, Porter enters the final year of his contract next season at $40.8 million and will be extension-eligible this offseason.
