The Golden State Warriors and forward Jonathan Kuminga are in a power struggle that will soon come to a head.
According to Anthony Slater & Shams Charania of ESPN, the Warriors have offered another contract to Kuminga. The organization has upped its offer to a three-year $75.2 million contract with a team option on the third year, but Kuminga has declined.
The message from Jonathan Kuminga and his agent Aaron Turner to the Warriors this week: Flip the team option to a player option and Kuminga will sign deal and buy-in to mission of getting Steph Curry another title.

The dilemma is that he wants a player option, but the team is only giving him a team option. His agent, Aaron Turner, has stated they would accept the offer and be all in on trying to get Stephen Curry his fifth ring if it's a player option instead of a team option.
Ironically, Kuminga will only be committed to the team if he has a player option, allowing him to control his future, rather than a team option.
In a trade scenario, a team option is far more appealing to other teams due to having the ability to control what they do with the player. A player option gives the player control over their future instead of a team option.
The two sides are in a power struggle that will be decided by Oct. 1, the deadline for Kuminga to decide on which offer he will choose. According to Warriors insider Slater, the young forward is leaning towards accepting the qualifying offer.
The tumultuous standoff between the Warriors and Kuminga has come down to control. The organization wants to be able to control what they do with Kuminga’s contract, but he wants to be able to control his future.
Kuminga’s agent went on the Warriors' flagship radio station, 95.7 The Game, midday show "Steiny & Guru," to talk about Kuminga’s situation and how the player option is important to the forward.
“The player option to him is super important… JK is clearly the guy that needs to sacrifice here for this to work. Okay, so that’s fine. He’s passing up opportunities where they are saying, I mean, B.J. Armstrong (Kings assistant GM) made a strong comment to JK like we want you… pic.twitter.com/ouOmlnH9jD

The closest way Kuminga can gain control of his future is if he accepts the qualifying offer, a one-year contract worth $7.9 million, and plays a year for the team. After the season is over, he will be an unrestricted free agent, finally having control of his future. Another aspect of the qualifying offer is that it gives him a no-trade clause, giving him control of where the team can trade him if they decide to trade the forward.
It’s extremely risky for Kuminga to accept the qualifying offer, declining the three-year $75.2 million contract, leaving $67.3 million on the table to be able to have control of his future. The power struggle for control will come to a boiling point, ultimately leading to a split between the organisation and Kuminga.
