The New Orleans Pelicans are in the hunt for a new head coach, and they might be turning to a former LA Lakers head coach.
The New Orleans Pelicans did not start the season well by any means, going 0-6 in their first few games. As a result, Pelicans head coach Willie Green faced fan backlash.
And after the Pelicans’ loss to the LA Lakers, the franchise decided to make some drastic changes to try to fix things.
This new direction involved firing Willie Green as Pelicans head coach and temporarily replacing him with assistant coach James Borrego.
Their first game under Borrego didn’t pan out well, as the Golden State Warriors trounced the Pelicans. But it appears Borrego isn’t guaranteed to be their long-term choice for the role.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the New Orleans Pelicans have interest in hiring former Los Angeles Lakers and current Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Darvin Ham.
While the Pelicans haven’t approached Ham for an interview just yet, he is a name to watch.
Along with Ham, the Pelicans are also interested in former Nets interim coach Kevin Ollie, someone who Joe Dumars is a fan of.
“Bucks assistant coach Darvin Ham, I’m told, is a name to watch in the Pelicans’ search.
“My former ESPN teammate Ian Begley reported this week that former UConn coach and Nets interim coach Kevin Ollie — long admired by Dumars’ top aide Troy Weaver — is another potential candidate.”
Stein: Darvin Ham "a name to watch" in Pelicans' head coaching search.

While Willie Green did himself no favors with his tactical choices as New Orleans Pelicans head coach, he is not solely to blame for their poor form.
The constant injury issues that have derailed Zion Williamson’s career have made him unreliable. Even new arrival Jordan Poole and starting point guard Dejounte Murray have been unavailable for large parts.
Given where the Pelicans are right now, blowing up the roster and building around Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen seems like their safest option.

However, there is one major concern. Joe Dumars traded the Pelicans’ unprotected first-round pick for next year to the Atlanta Hawks.
Therefore, they won’t be able to use their poor record to improve their roster next year, unless Dumars finds a way to land the draft pick back.
At this point, the Pelicans have no choice but to blow things up and hope that the lottery odds don’t cost them a generational talent.
