The New Orleans Pelicans made a bold move in the 2025 NBA Draft, but their 0-4 start to the season could haunt them.
The New Orleans Pelicans were absolutely humiliated by the Denver Nuggets, who blew them out in a lopsided fixture.
The Pelicans are now 0-4 to start the season, a record few would have expected given the moves they made this summer.
Aside from trading for Jordan Poole, the Pelicans drafted Jeremiah Fears with the #7 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
And they made a controversial move, trading an unprotected Pelicans 2026 first-round pick to the Hawks to move up and land Derik Queen.
With the 0-4 start to the season, the New Orleans Pelicans have dug themselves quite a hole, being one of only three teams without a win to start the season.
As a result, if this trend of losing continues, the Pelicans could find themselves in the NBA Draft Lottery come next spring. But this is not a good thing for them, as the Pelicans traded their pick to the Hawks.
At the time of the decision, Pelicans VP Joe Dumars defended the trade and Derik Queen, saying that the young star would be worth the pick they gave up.
Unfortunately, that hasn’t turned out to be the case, as Queen scored just 4 points tonight, and averaged 8.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 0.8 steals so far this season.
This summer, many claimed the Pelicans’ trade with the Hawks was a lopsided decision, as the Hawks were benefiting far more than the Pelicans.
If this losing streak gets any worse or continues into the season, the Pelicans will look absolutely foolish for having given up an unprotected pick for a stacked draft class.
An 0-4 start to the NBA season is far from ideal. However, all hope isn’t lost, as the season has just started, and the Pelicans can turn things around.
The Pelicans are in a strong position to turn things around, as they have a healthy Zion Williamson and some really good players.
There are some concerns about Willie Green as Pelicans head coach after the 0-4 start. But until things become absolutely dire, there is no sense in getting rid of him.
What the Pelicans must do is focus on one game at a time and slowly try to get their legs back underneath them to fix this issue.
