Last summer, the Philadelphia 76ers were crowned as the winners of free agency. They signed the biggest free agent on the market, Paul George. However, injury quickly derailed their season. One of the bright spots in the early season, Jared McCain, was also lost to a season-ending injury. And while many fans in Philly hoped for a healthier season, it seems like they are getting the same results again.
When training camp opened for the Sixers a few days ago, George talked about how he will not be ready for training camp. We also do not know what will happen with Joel Embiid. Without those two healthy, the 76ers have no hope of competing for a playoff spot or a championship title.
The team was hit by more bad news a few days ago. They announced that sophomore McCain has suffered a UCL tear in his right thumb. Fans in Philly fell in love with him last season and hope he will take another leap this season. But that will have to wait. Initially, the Sixers weighed the option of letting him rest and hoping to avoid surgery. However, it seems like they opted for surgery.
Brett Siegel was the first to report the news, saying, “76ers guard Jared McCain underwent surgery today to repair a torn UCL in his right thumb. It is expected that he will miss at least a month. The normal timeline for such injuries is 4-6 weeks before being re-evaluated. Philly has yet to give an official timeline for McCain.”
The timeline means that McCain will likely miss the start of the regular season. They open the season in Boston on October 22nd. Even if their prized sophomore can return in four weeks, he will miss the first several games. Realistically, he can return in mid-November, at which time the Sixers will already have 10 or more games under their belt.
Nowadays, it has become a common practice for athletes to post a picture of their post-surgery recovery. Well, McCain took it a bit further. He posted on his Instagram, but he didn’t say much.
“I feel like I’ve done this before. I feel good, I feel really good, actually. But I just can’t feel my arm. But everything happens for a reason. I want you all to know that and that life goes on,” said McCain.

From there, he continued singing some songs that helped him feel better. One thing is certain: he is in good spirits. The Sixers will need him focused when the regular season begins and they try to completely change the narrative from last season.
The injury to McCain will probably have a huge impact on this year’s rookie, VJ Edgecombe. Drafted third overall, the shooting guard has already impressed the organization. In the future, Edgecombe and McCain could be two of their young scoring guards. McCain averaged 15.3 points per game last season and had two 30+ point games.
Last season, the Sixers were lucky enough to jump in the lottery and protect their first-round pick. But the pick that didn’t convey last season transfers to this one. They owe a top-four protected pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder. If injuries plague their season again, they might end up in the lottery again. Only this time, they might not be as lucky. In an era where teams have to be careful with how they spend their money, losing a potential lottery pick could be devastating. That is cheap talent that teams cannot replace easily.
