For a long time, Kevin Garnett felt estranged from the Minnesota Timberwolves organization. He is a true legend in Minnesota, but he had a fractured relationship with now-former owner Glen Taylor.

With new owners, Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore, taking over, the Timberwolves are reconciling with Garnett.

The Minnesota Timberwolves finally changed their ownership group to Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore. The team is in a new era, and the new owners are supporting the organization by empowering Tim Connelly. At the same time, they also want to do right by some of their legendary players, specifically, Kevin Garnett.

The Big Ticket is a beloved figure in Minnesota, but the team has not shown it in the past decade. With Rodriguez and Lore firmly committed to the Timberwolves, they might be repairing their relationship with Garnett. Some people might prefer Anthony Edwards over Garnett nowadays, but people should never forget KG.

The Timberwolves plan on honoring Garnett’s era

Minnesota has been on an upward trajectory due to Edwards’ star power. Coach Chris Finch has also been instrumental in their ascent, as they reached two consecutive Western Conference Finals. Now, the team is looking to prove it deserves to be at the top of the West.

With Rodriguez and Lore now in charge, they want to keep trusting Connelly with his basketball decisions. At the same time, they also want to leave a mark on the franchise, and that might be a rebranding. The Timberwolves have had a solid visual identity since 2017, but with new ownership, they might make changes.

“We’ve done a lot of work in the background. I think our fan base is going to be very, very excited. Bringing back some of the history of the KG days is something we’re very aware is important to our fan base,” Rodriguez said in the presser about the potential rebrand.

“I’ve been an enormous fan of Kevin, we are similar ages. We both came out in a similar draft. We were both number one picks. I tracked him closely. If anything is important to our fan base, it will be important to us.”

“He’s the GOAT in Minnesota. We have tremendous respect for KG and everything he accomplished. We would love to get closer to him, and we know the fans want to see that,” Lore followed up.

With this allusion to the Garnett era, Rodriguez and Lore are already showing love to a former superstar. That might also lead to a potential jersey retirement, considering he was the team’s superstar.

The new owners will help the team grow and succeed

Aside from this rebrand, the owners are also showing their full support for the team. This is significant for the team and its fans, as they want to keep succeeding. That is huge for the Timberwolves, as they were not successful for the majority of Taylor’s time as owner.

With Rodriguez and Lore, the owners reassured the fans that they are 100% behind the team. They will pay the luxury tax and operate under the second apron, which opens more opportunities to succeed. When other players see this level of commitment, they might be willing to sign with the Timberwolves.

They already proved their support by spending some good money on re-signing Naz Reid and Julius Randle. The Reid contract was influential across the league, which could send a message to players to join them. Rodriguez and Lore also want to be part of the solution, so they will create a strong culture within the organization.

“Creating a culture where the best players want to come play, so that they want to come to Minnesota.

“Second, being willing to invest, pay the tax, and invest in the team. We think about it like we do a startup, startups lose money, but they’re investing because it’s creating enterprise value in the long-term,” Lore said in their presser about their support for the team.

“Investing in the team and in winning should lead to long-term value. It’s not the next three to five years, but it’s over the next 10, 20, 50 years even. We’re prepared to invest, we’re prepared to lose money to create a sustainable winning culture.”
