The New York Knicks, for the vast majority of the NBA season, have been the third seed in the Eastern Conference. With sizeable gaps between the second-place Boston Celtics and fourth-place Indiana Pacers, the Knicks are unlikely to move up or down in the standings, but they did recently get some good news.
Center Mitchell Robinson, who has been a starter for the last four seasons, has struggled with injuries throughout his career and is yet to make his debut this season, although a recent report suggests that his return could be on the horizon.
Robinson will almost certainly come off the bench now that the Knicks employ Karl-Anthony Towns, who will receive some MVP consideration this season, but he is a solid big man who can play some critical minutes in the five spot.
"Mitchell Robinson is closing on his season debut," reported ESPN's Shams Charania on Sunday. "Sources tell me his goal is to make his return to the lineup at some point over the next week. He has done multiple full scrimmages over the last several days and he's going to have another session scheduled for early in the week."
Last year, in 31 games, Robinson averaged 5.6 points. 8.5 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks. He is not a floor-spacer but shot 57.5 percent from the floor, and his return marks some added insurance for the Knicks to enjoy as they make a postseason push.
"He's expected to be an anchor for the Knicks' defense," Charania finished.
With Towns, Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby cemented as starters, Robinson and Miles McBride can give the Knicks some much-needed support in the second unit once he returns.
