The New York Knicks had one of their best seasons in years. However, the team lost to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, leading to the team dismissing head coach Tom Thibodeau. Many reports have come out about why the team decided to move on, but the fact remains that the franchise is looking for a new head coach. Early reports have suggested they are interested in Jason Kidd, but one NBA insider suggested he is not the only Western Conference coach the Knicks are eyeing. Reports indicate the team has Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch on their radar.
Ian Begley of SNY went through a variety of rumors around the New York Knicks head coaching vacancy. He indicated that while the Dallas Mavericks coach has the most buzz, Chris Finch shouldn’t be counted out. The Timberwolves have gone 209-160 since he took over in 2020-21. Minnesota has made the playoffs in four of its five seasons under Finch and has made back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances.
It would definitely be a good hire for the New York Knicks. However, there are complications with all the candidates they are reportedly targeting. The Knicks would have to send some type of compensation package back. Last offseason, the T’Wolves signed their head coach to an extension, tying him to the franchise through the 2027-28 season. If he were to jump ship, some type of agreement would need to be made.
There were three names that Begley mentioned in his report. One of them was Ime Udoka, but the Houston Rockets have made it clear that they have no interest in engaging in talks. Kidd has made a Final appearance with the Mavericks, but he feels less secure in his role. Finch is an interesting one. He has one of the game’s greatest young stars, Anthony Edwards. While the New York Knicks have plenty of great pieces, there was a lot that went right this season.
If none of these coaches want to leave their current positions, or teams simply won’t entertain any deals, what do the Knicks do? One of the risks in firing Thibodeau is that if the franchise doesn’t get someone better, it could look like a foolish move. The front office has its work cut out for it. Can they land a big name and get to the Finals with this core next year?
