Since his 2015 draft selection, Karl-Anthony Towns has never been the top defensive player. He was frequently called for unnecessary fouls during the New York Knicks‘ postseason run, and his defensive shortcomings were an issue. The Knicks lost in the Eastern Conference finals as a result of most of their opponents, particularly the Indiana Pacers, taking advantage of them.
Offensively, KAT is an excellent player. He can create his shots, as well as open the floor for his teammates. Through 18 games in the NBA playoffs, he averaged 21.4 points, 11.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists. In the conference finals, he had 24.8 points, 12.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists.
However, Towns would often commit fouls that were needless in their postseason run. He averaged 4.3 fouls, which is the most for the Knicks, during the entire playoffs. In their series against the Indiana Pacers, he averaged 4.2 fouls.
This didn’t help the Knicks as they were eliminated by the Pacers in six games, ending their season. Following the conclusion of their campaign, a report from James L. Edwards III revealed the team’s frustration over the unintelligent fouls that KAT committed in the playoffs.
“Publicly, Knicks players made veiled comments all season about poor communication causing their inconsistencies. Behind the scenes, they and coaches expressed frustration with Towns’ defensive habits — less concerned with his talent level and more with his process on that end. Too often, Towns executed incorrect coverages without communicating why he did it. After it became a theme, players worried Towns didn’t grasp the importance of the matter,” Edwards wrote.

It was one of the most important series for New York, but the fouls that Towns got put the team in trouble on more than one occasion.
Towns had a blunt response to an NBA legend after his fouls were questioned during the New York Knicks’ conference finals
In Game 5, the New York Knicks got back into the series and earned a win to force a Game 6. Towns played a significant factor for the organization with his 24 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. However, he accumulated five fouls during the contest.
After the game, he was interviewed by TNT’s “Inside the NBA.” One of the hosts, NBA legend Charles Barkley, had a straightforward question for KAT.
“Why do you be getting them dumb fouls?” Barkley asked.
KAT gave a direct response, acknowledging that he had no explanation for his unnecessary fouls.
“God only knows,” Towns replied.
Barkley pointed out that when he got his fourth foul, the Pacers took advantage of his absence and made a run. KAT was aware of the damage he had done to his team and acknowledged his mistakes.
“You ain’t wrong,” Towns said. “It hurts my team.”
Now that his offseason has started early, he can work on improving his defense for next season.
