The Philadelphia 76ers have a new face of the franchise as point guard Tyrese Maxey has emerged as the most consistent contributor in his sixth season with the organization. The 25-year-old has dominated offensively while holding the highest usage rate in the NBA.

Through his first 15 games of the year, Maxey has posted 33.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 7.9 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 47.3% from the field, 42.1% from three-point range and 87.8% from the free-throw line.

His explosive scoring, improved playmaking and ability to thrive under pressure have solidified his role as the focal point of Philadelphia’s offense, giving the team a reliable star to build around as they chase contention in the Eastern Conference.

Maxey got off to another strong start on Sunday against the Miami Heat at home. However, the 76ers still fell 127-117, dropping their record to 9-7. To make matters worse, Maxey left the game before its conclusion with an apparent injury. With 1:29 remaining in the fourth quarter, he began clutching his shoulder and headed to the locker room.

After the game, head coach Nick Nurse explained that Maxey originally suffered the injury in the first half and was evaluated at halftime, but still managed to suit up and finish the contest. He added that there were no further updates (h/t Austin Krell of On Pattinson).

If Maxey misses time, it would be a massive blow to Philadelphia’s backcourt. He has been everything for the 76ers this season and is well on his way to earning his second career All-Star selection.

Individual accolades aside, Philadelphia would be in serious trouble without his services, especially with center Joel Embiid continuing to miss time due to a knee injury. Maxey, who was selected by the 76ers in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft, has become the team’s most dependable player.

That reliability is exactly why the 76ers moved quickly to secure his future. In July 2024, Maxey signed a five-year, $204 million extension, a deal that underscored the organization’s belief in him as the franchise centerpiece.

With Embiid still battling knee trouble and Paul George working his way back from surgery on a minutes restriction, Philadelphia cannot afford to lose Maxey for any stretch.

His health and continued growth will ultimately determine whether the 76ers can maintain momentum and position themselves as a true contender in the Eastern Conference.
