Nick Saban and Charles Barkley are two of the greatest figures in their respective sports.
Saban is often considered the greatest college football coach of all time. He has won seven national championships, six with the Alabama Crimson Tide and one with the LSU Tigers. Over his 28-season coaching career, he compiled an impressive record of 297-71-1. After spending 17 seasons at Alabama, Saban retired following the 2023 season and is now an analyst for ESPN's "College GameDay."
On the other hand, Charles Barkley had a legendary NBA career, earning multiple accolades including 11 All-Star selections, five All-NBA First Team selections, five All-NBA Second Team selections, an NBA All-Rookie Team selection, the MVP award in 1993 and the All-Star Game MVP award in 1991. He's now an NBA analyst on TNT's "Inside the NBA."
Although Saban is famous for his tenure at Alabama and Barkley played college basketball for its rival, the Auburn Tigers, one might expect them to be natural enemies. However, during an interview at Saban's charity golf event, the "Nick's Kids Golf Tournament," Saban took a moment to express his admiration for Barkley.
"I love Charles," Saban said. "He does a great job. He sets a really good example in the community because he's given a lot back to the community as well. I think he's supported college athletics. I think he does a great job from a professional standpoint in his commentating career. I'm always interested to hear what he has to say in terms of how he analyzes situations."
Barkley has expressed his admiration for Saban on multiple occasions. He has mentioned that he holds a great deal of respect for Saban and considers him a friend. One notable gesture that Barkley appreciated was when Saban called him to speak to the team before Saban's retirement, which made Barkley feel proud.
Barkley has been a generous donor to college athletics. Last year, he donated $1 million to support Auburn's women's athletics, specifically to enhance the women's basketball program. He also contributed $1 million to the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) to help reduce the state's recidivism rate.
Although Barkley and Saban come from rival schools, their strong friendship transcends that rivalry.
