Nico Harrison's Strong Statement on Why He Shouldn’t Be Fired

Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison conducted his end-of-the-season press conference on Monday with local reporters and one media member asked the exec why he shouldn't be fired.

Harrison traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February. After making the NBA Finals last year, the Mavericks missed the postseason this year.

Harrison has received death threats from Dallas fans for trading Doncic, the 25-year-old all-world talent who didn't want to be traded. The Mavericks acquired Anthony Davis and Max Christie from the Lakers but missed the playoffs after losing to the Memphis Grizzlies in the West's final play-in game.

When a reporter asked Harrison why he shouldn't be fired, the former Nike exec didn't mince words.

"Well one, I think I've done a really good job here," Harrison said. "And I don't think I can be judged by the injuries this year. You have to judge the totality, from beginning to end. I think I have a really good working relationship with Patrick (Dumont). I think you add in Rick (Weltz), the leadership that we have is really elite and you'll see next year when our team comes back we're gonna be competing for a championship."

All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving tore his left ACL in March and Davis only appeared in nine games with the Mavericks after the Doncic trade due to an adductor injury.

Irving and Davis played in just one game together.

According to Tim Cato of DLLS, Patrick Dumont is upset that Harrison didn't warn him Mavericks fans would be this angry about the Doncic trade. That is a noteworthy report since Harrison said he has a "good working relationship" with Dumont.

2025 was a disaster year for the Mavericks. The franchise may not have a bright future either since Irving is coming back from an ACL tear and Davis is 32 years old.
