Nike, Nets' Kyrie Irving have 'mutually decided to part ways'

Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving is no longer affiliated with Nike.

According to Gabrielle Fonrouge and Jessica Golden of CNBC, Nike confirmed on Monday that it has officially cut ties with Irving. It was learned last month that the company had suspended its partnership with Irving and scrapped the release of the Kyrie 8, a scheduled signature shoe after the 30-year-old shared a link to a movie and book that contain antisemitic tropes via social media and initially refused to apologize for doing so.

"We have mutually decided to part ways and wish Nike the best in their future endeavors," Shetellia Riley Irving, the player's agent, told CNBC.

The Nets suspended Irving without pay for a minimum of five games last month, and he ultimately missed eight contests until he returned to action on Nov. 20. According to Brian Lewis of the New York Post, Irving had been under contract with Nike since 2014, and Lewis noted that deal was worth $11 million as of 2019.

"Kyrie stepped over the line," Nike founder Phil Knight previously said on CNBC. "It’s kind of that simple. He made some statements that we just can’t abide by and that’s why we ended the relationship. And I was fine with that."

Irving eventually issued an apology via his Instagram page. He is averaging 24.4 points, 4.4 assists and 4.4 rebounds for the 13-12 Nets. Brooklyn next hosts the 7-16 Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday.
