According to Bennett Durando of The Denver Post, superstar center Nikola Jokic has informed the Denver Nuggets that he will not sign an extension this NBA offseason.
Jokic can make more money next offseason.
“Nikola Jokic has informed the Nuggets he will not sign a contract extension this offseason, team sources told The Denver Post, as the three-time MVP intends to wait until next summer to engage in contract talks,” Durando wrote. “Jokic has a minimum of two years remaining on his current supermax contract, as well as a player option for the 2027-28 season. Tuesday was the first day he was eligible for an extension that would add up to three years and $212 million to that deal.
“However, he can earn an additional $80 million, approximately, by pushing off an extension until the 2026 offseason. The Nuggets presented both options to Jokic in conversations with him and his representation. Jokic’s camp is electing to wait — a decision that Nuggets leadership was anticipating because of the money on the table, team sources said.”
The Nuggets won the championship in 2023 against the Miami Heat in five games, with Jokic winning the Finals MVP Award.
Since then, Denver has lost in the second round of the postseason in seven games two years in a row.
The Nuggets lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 2024 playoffs and fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the 2025 playoffs.
Jokic averaged a triple-double and finished second in MVP voting last season. The future Hall of Famer put up 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 10.2 assists per game while shooting 57.6% from the field, 41.7% from beyond the arc and 80.0% from the free-throw line.
The 30-year-old Jokic has spent his entire career with the Nuggets. He’s the top player in franchise history and will go down as one of the best players of all time.
A seven-time All-Star, Jokic has career averages of 21.8 points, 10.9 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 745 games with Denver.
The Nuggets have been busy this offseason. They traded Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets for Cameron Johnson and signed Bruce Brown and Tim Hardaway Jr.
Denver also traded Dario Saric to the Sacramento Kings for Jonas Valanciunas, but Valanciunas wants to leave America for Panathinaikos.
