There has been a major shakeup at the top of the 2025 recruiting class.
Five-star BYU commit AJ Dybantsa has long been atop 247Sports' rankings, claiming that spot from the moment he reclassified from the 2026 class back in October of 2023.
However, Dybantsa's reign as the top player in the rankings came to an end on Wednesday. As revealed by Finkelstein, the forward has now been jumped by five-star Kansas commit, Darryn Peterson.
"While a full, final update will arrive in May as it always does," Finkelstein wrote. "247Sports could wait no longer in minting Darryn Peterson, a Kansas signee, as the new No. 1 player after we saw all we needed to see from the five-star combo guard at the McDonald's All American Game and Chipotle National. Peterson jumps AJ Dybantsa for the spot."
Peterson joins both Andrew Wiggins and Josh Jackson as Kansas signees to earn the No. 1 spot in 247Sports' rankings. The Lawrence-bounce combo guard was named co-MVP of the McDonald's All American Game earlier this month.
He played his high school basketball for Prolific Prep in Napa, California, which is an elite program that has produced players like Jackson, Gary Trent Jr. and Jalen Green. His team's season came to an end after being bounced out of the Chipotle Nationals by Dynamic Prep out of Texas.
While Peterson's name may not be as widespread as Dybantsa's, the intial sign that he could overtake him was when ESPN's 2026 NBA mock draft at the end of last month that had Peterson going No. 1 instead of Dybantsa.
With these two headed to Big 12 programs, there's a tremendous chance they will cross paths a few times next season. A spectacle that should draw the attentoon of college basketball fans everywhere.
