Kevin Durant will undoubtedly be remembered as one of basketball's greatest and most accomplished players. While "The Slim Reaper" has achieved remarkable success throughout his 17-year-long NBA career, his ventures outside basketball haven't shared the same fortune.

This was particularly evident with his movie "Thunderstruck," which turned out to be such a disaster that the 6'11" forward swore to give up acting altogether.

Durant's Thunderstruck was a huge flop

By the time the movie was released in the summer of 2012, Durant had started establishing himself as one of the best scorers in the league. Not only had he led the league in scoring for three consecutive seasons, but he had also become a regular member of the All-NBA First Team. However, despite his rising NBA stardom and yet-to-be-won MVP award, his foray into acting would prove less successful.

The movie's plot revolves around Durant magically switching basketball abilities with his 16-year-old fan named Brian, who eventually gains access to all of KD's natural abilities on the hardwood.

Ultimately, after Brian experiences severe attention and praise for possessing a once-in-a-lifetime skillset, he decides to give his hero back his power to save his NBA season during clutch playoff time. This concept failed to resonate with the audience, eventually earning a mediocre 5.1 IMDb rating out of 10.

Moreover, the movie only generated $587,211 in domestic ticket sales. To put this financial disappointment into perspective (as per Business Insider), the movie "Mirror-Mirror" was speculated to be a box office flop, but it still managed to earn $64,9 million.

Kevin swore never to act again

When TMZ approached the two-time Finals MVP about his film's flop and asked if Shaquille O'Neal's "Kazaam" was better than it, Durant unhesitantly picked the latter, stating that he was only a basketball player.

"No, I play basketball," Durant said.

While the two-time NBA Champ's legacy as one of the game's greatest players remains secure, this experience serves as a reminder that even the most successful athletes face setbacks outside their comfort zone.

His graceful acceptance of the movie's failure and decision to focus on his true strengths offer a valuable lesson in self-awareness and humility. So, whenever you feel disheartened by setbacks outside your comfort zone, remember even one of the greatest NBA players faced financial and box office challenges.
