Norman Powell’s 14-year-old tweet about Dwyane Wade resurfaces after Miami Heat home debut

Norman Powell was the Miami Heat’s biggest offseason addition via a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Heat gave up Kevin Love, Kyle Anderson, and a Clippers second round pick for the 32-year-old.

Powell almost made his first All-Star appearance last season and will now be expected to make it this year.

He has already made a great start to his time in Miami, helping them win two out of their opening three games.

Powell has even reminded Heat fans of Dwyane Wade with his 24-point-per-game average, which now makes sense after reading one old tweet.

Norman Powell looked up to Dwyane Wade years ago

Norman Powell announced in May 2011 that he was going to model his game on Dwyane Wade.

“I’m going to study Dwayne Wade’s games and model my game after his,” he said in a tweet that has resurfaced after his home debut.

Wade had already won a championship with the Heat in 2006 and was en route to his second Finals appearance.

He and LeBron James then led Miami all the way to the last round of the playoffs before losing to Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks.

Wade was sensational during that postseason run, so it is no surprise that Powell wanted to emulate his play style.

And after four years at UCLA and a decade in the NBA, Powell is now developing into one of the best shooting guards in the league.

He will never reach Wade’s Hall of Fame status, but he could become a fan favorite in Miami if he keeps up his performances.

Norman Powell texted Dwyane Wade after Miami Heat trade

Dwyane Wade revealed during the summer that Norman Powell reached out to him after he was traded to Miami.

After previously speaking to each other in France, Powell immediately shared his excitement at the news with the Heat legend.

Wade explained: “I think I was golfing, and I came back and had a text on my phone, and he was just like, ‘Yo, big bro, I’m on my way. I’m going down to Miami. I can’t wait to put the jersey on.’

“I’m looking at it like, ‘Who is this?’ Then it hit me that Norman Powell just got traded. I was like, ‘Oh, this is Norman.’ So I hit him right back and we started rapping.

“I know how much inspiration he took from the player I was, being a guy who was 6’3” or 4”, compact, quick, explosive. He has taken pieces of different people’s games, and he’s given me some love for what he has taken from me.

“So, it’s cool to have that connection. It’s a dream for him to put that jersey on because he grew up watching one of his favorite players play in that jersey, so it’s going to be an emotional night for him when he actually gets out there and puts that jersey on.”
