The Oklahoma City Thunder won the Western Conference finals on Wednesday and sent the Minnesota Timberwolves. In Game 5, the Thunder did not waste any chances and dominated the Wolves from the start, which led to a 124-94 victory. All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took home the Western Conference finals MVP, averaging 31 points, five rebounds, eight assists and 1.8 steals through five games.

In Game 5, the 2025 regular season MVP led the Thunder with 34 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and two steals. Gilgeous-Alexander was efficient from the field and shot 56 percent of his attempts. His co-star, Jalen Williams, helped out with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

The entire team was on the same page with how they defended Minnesota. They had 14 steals and eight blocks in the crucial bout that prevented even the Wolves’ best players from finding their spots. The Anthony Edwards-led team had 21 turnovers, which was one of the main problems for the team.

After the contest, former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson issued an apology to the young Thunder core. At first, he didn’t believe OKC could be a team that could contend for the Larry O’Brien trophy. He posted on X (formerly Twitter) to present his public apology.

“I want to apologize to the Oklahoma City Thunder for underestimating them and not thinking they were ready to compete for a Championship,” Magic posted.

The three-time Finals MVP gave a special shoutout to SGA for winning the conference finals MVP.

“Congratulations to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for winning the MVP of the Western Conference Finals named after me. What I love about Shai is that he dominates on the court and is humble off the court!”

The Oklahoma City Thunder has to wait to see the outcome of the Eastern Conference finals between the New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers to see which team they’ll face in the NBA Finals.

Oklahoma City Thunder’s star compares the team to an AAU group

A lot of the success the Oklahoma City Thunder has achieved is due to its young core. Most players in the Thunder are almost the same age and understand their respective roles. During the postgame interview, Williams talked about comparing the team to an AAU squad.

“I think everybody always talks about how we’re kinda like an AAU team, it sounds like a joke but it’s also kinda just like how our team is. We really enjoy being around each other,” Williams said.

According to Williams, the struggles they’ve experienced early on have helped them create a unique bond. The one-time All-Star said that it has made them closer as a squad.
