The Oklahoma City Thunder are fresh off the 2025 NBA championship. Despite their success, they continue to work hard on their game. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the standout player, but he has also witnessed Chet Holmgren make massive strides.

After a successful 2024-25 season that saw the Oklahoma City Thunder earn the #1 seed and win the championship, the expectations continue to rise for the team. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the reigning MVP and Finals MVP, but he still wants to elevate his game, as the Thunder do not want to rely on a set blueprint for their success.

The rest of the team must match his growth, which is why players like Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren are doing well in the offseason. Holmgren, in particular, has been getting rave reviews from Gilgeous-Alexander during training camp.

As the #2 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, people already knew Holmgren would be good. However, his hard work is paying off, as he has become a top-tier defensive player with a substantial contract, and the Thunder view him as a key building block for the long-term future.

Gilgeous-Alexander raves about Holmgren’s improvements

After a championship, it would be understandable if players coasted a bit during the offseason. That is not what happened with the Thunder because they celebrated, but they also went back to work after the high moments.

This showcases the winning mentality being instilled in the players within the OKC Thunder organization. For the star player, Gilgeous-Alexander, he has seen that Holmgren has made massive improvements to his game and physical traits that could make him another star.

As the team’s superstar and leader, Gilgeous-Alexander is aware of how his teammates have worked in the offseason. Despite all the positive improvements, Holmgren remains the standout, and Gilgeous-Alexander is enjoying working with him.

“He’s definitely stronger, and I expected that. We had a run last year, and he was coming off an injury, and it was a lower-body injury.

”Of course, there’s going to be some strength that needs to come back. But we see it every day. Nothing surprising,” Gilgeous-Alexander said after practice.

“Chet is who he is and is going to be who he is going to become. But, yeah, he’s been great, so far… It wouldn’t be the greatest thing if I didn’t see too many changes, but we, for sure, got better, individually, and as a group.”

“As the year goes on, you get closer and closer, so, cohesively, we’re better as well on both ends of the floor. We had played 100-something games last year… We’re definitely better this training camp than the last”

The Thunder are favorites to win the title again

Even though other teams have made improvements to their rosters, the Thunder have maintained their squad. They want to win the title again, and coach Mark Daigneault is ready to lead them to the promised land again.

The offense is still strong with Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams leading the charge. However, their defense will continue to be the gold standard in the NBA. They have the potential to become the league’s next dynasty, and Gilgeous-Alexander will be at the forefront.

However, he is not alone, as he has a fantastic supporting cast. Holmgren and Williams are the biggest names apart from their superstar. However, they still have names like Luguentz Dort, Alex Caruso, and Isaiah Hartenstein.

The sky is the limit for the Thunder, and with the improvements they’ve made in the offseason, especially with Holmgren, it will be challenging to stop them. The Thunder have all the tools at their disposal, and they will look to keep that going.
