Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder came out victorious on Sunday and were crowned the 2025 NBA champions. Gilgeous-Alexander took home Finals MVP honors for averaging 30.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.6 blocks. He’s the first player to win both the regular-season MVP and Finals MVP in the same year since LeBron James in 2013 with the Miami Heat.

It was a well-deserved championship for the Thunder. They were at the top of the league with the best record of 68-14 and beat all of their opponents in the playoffs. Even the Indiana Pacers, who were the underdogs throughout the entire 2025 postseason, gave them a challenging Finals series, lasting seven games.

While it was a sweet end to the Thunder’s season, the Pacers’ start to Game 7 was unexpected. After making three shots from beyond the arc, All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton went down the floor and suffered a non-contact injury. Although Haliburton hasn’t undergone an MRI scan, it’s believed that he suffered a torn right Achilles tendon.

After winning the title, Gilgeous-Alexander talked to the media about the unfortunate injury that the Pacers star suffered.

“I just asked him if he was alright, it seemed like he was in pain,” Shai Gilgeous-Alexander told reporters about him approaching Haliburton.

“You just hate to see it, in sports in general. But in this moment, my heart dropped for him. I couldn’t imagine playing the biggest game of my life and something like that happening. It’s so unfortunate, it’s not fair, the competition isn’t fair sometimes.

“I just felt so bad for him… Prayers go out to him for sure. Hell of a player. Future’s bright, that team’s going to be really good for a long time. Impressive team, impressive player, I wish him the best of luck.”

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander says that it feels good to be a champion

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has longed to win the NBA championship ever since he emerged as a star with the Thunder. On Sunday, he achieved a much-awaited title after outlasting the Pacers through seven games. During SGA’s postgame presser, he discussed what he feels after getting the job done.

“It feels amazing, so much weight off my shoulders, so much stress relieved… It feels good to be a champion.”

It was a long process for the Thunder, as they collected multiple assets through the years. With the draft capital they collected, the front office used it to build around SGA. It proved to be the winning recipe, which eventually led them to a championship.
