Oklahoma Sooners are inching closer and closer to landing a top-15 prospect that they desperately need

It's not a secret that the Oklahoma Sooners basketball program is not on the same level as the football program or even softball, and honestly, even basketball at the moment. In fact, they may be behind the women's basketball team, too.

But, with great recruiting and results placed on the court, they could make their way up the hierarchy for Sooners sports. They have already done a good job of the recruiting part for the 2025 season, and now the 2026 season is the season they are recruiting for.

Landing a top-15 recruit would surely help them in every way possible. And, they are inching closer and closer to landing him.

Sooners still in running for 2026 SF Jalen Montonati

Jalen Montonati, a 6'7" small forward from Owasso High School in Oklahoma, is a top high school basketball prospect in the class of 2026. Ranked as a five-star recruit, he’s listed between No. 9 and No. 16 nationally by major recruiting services like Rivals, 247Sports, ESPN, and On3.

Known for his elite shooting and scoring versatility, Montonati averaged 18.3 points per game with 46.6% three-point shooting at the Nike EYBL and dropped 28 points against Long Island Lutheran at the City of Palms Classic. He led Owasso to its first Class 6A state title in 2024, scoring 34 points in the championship game, earning him the 2023-24 Gatorade Oklahoma Boys Basketball Player of the Year award.

His father, Brian Montonati, a former Oklahoma State player and professional overseas, coaches him at Owasso and has shaped a ton of his game that we see today. Jalen’s ability to score from three, off the dribble, and on the move, paired with his length and athleticism, makes him a tough matchup. He shot 40% from three on 106 attempts playing for Mokan Elite.

Montonati has over 20 scholarship offers from schools like Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Indiana, Baylor, and Duke. He’s visited Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Indiana, with plans to see Kansas State.

His Oklahoma State ties are strong due to his father’s history, but he’s still weighing options. But, that doesn't mean that Oklahoma is out of the race. Trae Young, the former Sooner, current Atlanta Hawks PG, and current GM of the basketball side of things, has been putting in work, along with head coach Porter Moser.
