Glorified NBA bust Kwame Brown failed with his basketball career, but he is part of an extremely rare club of players who were teammates with both Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.
While Brown never really produced on the floor at the professional level, he did have a front-row seat to two of the greatest players to grace the Association, and naturally, it was easy to identify the similarities and differences between the two icons.
Following his retirement, Kwame sat down for an interview and described how the pair stacked up against each other.
"On the court, they are the exact same personality, and in the locker room, Kobe couldn't do what MJ did. I don't know how MJ was able to move around without security. You could see MJ in the local casino, a local bar with this little short guy. Kobe, on the other hand, not so much, and I didn't get to see him on a personal side like that. It's almost like Kobe studied MJ cause they were so similar in practices and when we went for dinners, but that is about that. MJ is just a regular dude; he is a regular guy that can hoop," he said.
The 6'11" center's comments aren't surprising, given that the duo had exactly the same personality on the court. Bryant and MJ were serial winners who wouldn't settle for anything less than perfection in the game of basketball.
Of course, it's no secret that Kobe dedicated his basketball life to studying "His Airness." From how he approached the game to his personal trainer to his fadeaway and everything in between, Bryant made it a habit of calling Jordan at all hours of the night and picking his brain.
Still, the obviously glaring difference between them was off the court. Jordan played during an era when he was able to move around more freely from a social standpoint, without cameras and social media following his every move, whereas Kobe didn't necessarily have that luxury during his career.
Brown's comments praising MJ's personality are particularly intriguing, especially since Kwame despised the six-time champ during his time with the Washington Wizards. As his famous recount goes, "Mr. Air" only drafted Brown to immediately trade him before the front office abruptly disrupted his plans. According to Kwame, Jordan then proceeded to make his life a living hell by torturing him in practice and only putting him during junk time.
It's unknown whether their relationship ever mended as time went on, but Brown's ability to look past all the trauma and still give flowers to Kobe and MJ deserves some recognition.
He may be labeled as the biggest bust in NBA history by the masses, but at least he got to experience sharing a locker room with two of the all-time greats along the way.
