Orlando Magic Stun Pelicans with Epic 15-Point Second-Half Comeback
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2) reacts after a loose ball against Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero

There is something inherently thrilling about a team that simply refuses to quit. On a tense Sunday night at the Smoothie King Center, the Orlando Magic proved exactly why they are a nightmare matchup as the regular season winds down. Trailing by 15 points in the second half, Orlando dug deep, leaned on their heavy hitters, and snatched a gritty 112-108 victory away from the New Orleans Pelicans.

Desmond Bane and Paolo Banchero Fuel the Comeback

When the lights shine brightest, the best players step up to the plate. Desmond Bane was the absolute catalyst for the Magic, pouring in 27 crucial points. His ability to hit tough shots when the offense stalled kept Orlando within striking distance before the final push. Down the stretch, Bane was ice cold from the free-throw line, hitting the game-sealing shot with just 9.5 seconds left on the clock.

But Bane didn’t do it alone. Paolo Banchero put the team on his back, delivering a punishing double-double with 23 points, an astounding 16 rebounds, and 6 assists. Banchero’s physicality and relentless rebounding gave Orlando the second-chance opportunities they desperately needed. Every time the Magic needed a crucial stop or a physical drive to the basket, Banchero was there, asserting his dominance in the paint.

A Tale of Two Halves for the Orlando Magic

To say the Magic struggled out of the gate would be an understatement. Orlando went into the halftime locker room staring at a 60-52 deficit. The primary culprit? An absolutely freezing shooting performance from beyond the arc. They missed 18 of their first 20 three-point attempts, looking entirely out of sync.

Jalen Suggs, usually a reliable spark plug, endured a nightmare start. He missed his first five attempts from deep and shot a staggering 1-for-12 from the floor overall early on. Things looked completely dire early in the third quarter when Pelicans rookie Jeremiah Fears knocked down a massive three-pointer to push the New Orleans lead to double digits. Shortly after, the deficit ballooned to 15.

However, basketball is a game of runs. Despite the horrific shooting start, the Magic leaned into their defensive identity. Suggs finally found his rhythm, hitting back-to-back clutch threes to spark a ferocious 14-2 run in the fourth quarter. Suddenly, a game that looked completely out of reach was flipped entirely on its head.

Pelicans Collapse Despite Saddiq Bey’s Heroics

The New Orleans Pelicans have to be searching for answers after this one. They completely dominated the early phases of the game, largely thanks to a blistering performance from Saddiq Bey. Bey finished the night with a game-high 32 points, doing everything in his power to snap the team’s miserable losing skid.

Yves Missi also delivered a massive performance for New Orleans, securing a season-high 18 points to go along with 13 tough rebounds. Yet, despite these individual performances, the Pelicans’ offense completely evaporated when it mattered most. The team managed to hit just a single field goal in the final 4:50 of the fourth quarter.

Perhaps the most alarming takeaway for New Orleans was the quiet fourth quarter from Zion Williamson. Zion finished with a respectable 17 points, but managed only a single point in the final, decisive period. When your franchise star goes missing in crunch time, holding onto a lead becomes nearly impossible against a hungry team like the Magic.

Playoff Implications for the Magic

With this breathtaking victory, the Magic extend their total dominance over the Pelicans, winning their ninth straight matchup against New Orleans. But more importantly, the win pushes Orlando to a 42-36 record.

Currently sitting in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, the Magic have successfully pulled within just one game of the sixth-place Philadelphia 76ers. Avoiding the chaotic play-in tournament is the ultimate prize at the moment. If they continue to show the kind of heart and determination they displayed on Sunday night, the Orlando Magic are going to be a terrifying out in the postseason.
