Orlando rookie fails QB audition with Seahawks

Paolo Banchero was a star high school quarterback. He showed off his arm for his hometown NFL team.

Banchero visited the Seattle Seahawks training camp, where he competed with offensive tackle in Greg Eiland in a throwing contest. The challenge? Getting a pass to land, and stay, on a tiny roof at the team's training camp facility. While Banchero showed off his strong throwing arm, Eiland ultimately had the feathery touch to land the pass and win the contest.

As a freshman at Seattle's O'Dea High, Banchero played quarterback for the team that won the state title in 2017. Sharing time with a junior, Banchero completed 15 of his 36 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown and caught a pass - you can probably guess O'Dea had a run-heavy offense.

But after his triumph, Banchero focused on football, possibly because he was already taller than any quarterback in NFL history (Seattle QB Dan McGwire was 6-foot-10). And after winning a state title in hoops, becoming the No. 1 pick in the draft and winning Rookie of the Year, Banchero clearly made the right choice.

Still, his teammates speculate how good he could have been. "He used to be one of the fastest guys when we played and had a mean stiff arm," said high school teammate Owen Prentice. "It was kind of hard to stop a 40-inch long stiff arm."

Banchero definitely still loves the Seahawks. Head coach Pete Carroll let him close down practice at the end, where he towered over the other Seahawks in the huddle.

Plus, with rumors still swirling about an NBA expansion team in Seattle, Seahawks fans can dream about their one-time local two-sport star coming back to the Pacific Northwest someday. Just not as a QB.
