Pacers officially waive James Wiseman, sign Mac McClung

The Pacers made it official Tuesday, signing guard Mac McClung to a multiyear contract and waiving center James Wiseman, the team announced in a press release.

McClung’s deal is non-guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, while HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto first reported that Indiana opened the roster spot by parting ways with Wiseman.

Per Spotrac’s Keith Smith, Wiseman’s deal will still count for $1 million against the cap this season due to a partial guarantee.

Wiseman, 24, signed with Indiana last offseason after stints with Golden State and Detroit and was viewed as the likely backup to Myles Turner before tearing his left Achilles tendon in the season opener.

He re-signed on a two-year deal in July but appeared in just one game this fall, finishing with four points and four rebounds in 20 minutes during a loss at Memphis.

The move makes sense given the Pacers’ depth up front and their current shortage of healthy guards.

McClung, 26, is best known for winning three straight NBA Slam Dunk Contests but has become one of the G League’s top performers in recent year.

He earned All-NBAGL First Team honors last season with the Osceola Magic, averaging 23.0 points, 5.4 assists, and 3.9 rebounds while shooting 48 percent from the field.

He’s appeared in just six NBA games across four teams but will now get his first standard contract with Indiana.

As Charania noted, McClung had recently signed and been waived by the Bulls and was expected to start the season in the G League before the Pacers called.

For now, he’ll get a chance to bring his energy — and high-flying flair — to a team looking for backcourt help.
