The Pacers are planning to bring in free agent forward Cody Martin, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. The deal is expected to come via hardship exception, meaning it’ll be a 10-day.
Martin, 30, spent most of his career with the Hornets before being sent to the Suns last February along with Vasilije Micic in the Jusuf Nurkic trade.
At his best, Martin’s been a versatile two-way wing. He averaged 7.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals for Charlotte in 2021–22 while shooting 48 percent from the field and 38 percent on threes.
But injuries derailed the next two years, as he played just 35 total games over that span. He bounced back a bit last season, appearing in 53 games for Charlotte and Phoenix, but his shooting dipped (41.8 percent overall, 28.5 percent from deep). The Suns waived him June 30.
Indiana has a full roster, so a hardship exception is the path. They already have Jeremiah Robinson-Earl on a hardship. If they’ve been awarded a second, they can keep Robinson-Earl and add Martin.
A hardship exception is granted when four players have missed three consecutive games and are expected to miss at least two more weeks. Five players meeting that criteria can lead to a second hardship.
