The Pacers are waiving Mac McClung and signing Monte Morris to a one-year deal, per Shams Charania of ESPN.
Dustin Dopirak of the Indianapolis Star reported the contract will be non-guaranteed. Bobby Marks of ESPN added that waiving McClung will carry a cap hit of $164,060 for the rest of the season.
This is a pure experience play. The Pacers have guards down all over the roster, and Morris is trusted with the ball. He owns a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.9 to 1.
Morris is entering his ninth NBA season and played 45 games last year with the Suns. He averaged 5.2 points, 1.6 assists, and 1.5 rebounds in 12.7 minutes. The Pacers originally planned to bring him into camp before a September calf injury delayed the signing.
McClung became a household name by winning three straight Slam Dunk contests. But he has barely played real NBA minutes. He appeared in three games for Indiana and averaged 6.3 points in 11.3 minutes.
Morris is expected to be active quickly. Coach Rick Carlisle is said to be leaning into the move because Indiana needs stability.
“We need someone who can organize us,” a team source told Hoops Wire. “Right now, we are stretched thin. Monte will help the room.”
The Pacers are 1-7 and coming off a loss to the hapless Nets.
