Paolo Banchero Admits His National Team Choice May Have Cost Him Love Back Home

Paolo Banchero, the Italian-American professional basketball player, disappointed his Italian fans in 2020. At that time, Banchero, who had recently expressed confidence in the Orlando Magic’s potential, was eligible to represent the Italian national team and had shown interest in participating in international competitions.

Banchero was selected to the 24-man EuroBasket 2022 qualification squad in November 2020, though he ultimately did not play. The relationship between Banchero and his Italian fans deteriorated further in June 2023 when he decided to compete for the U.S. national team at the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

This decision caused a significant rift with his Italian supporters. In a recent interview, Banchero reflected on his relationship with Italian fans.

“If you ask me I would say they don’t like me too much. I think you have to ask some fans how they feel but it is what it is at this point,” Banchero said.

Banchero believes Italian fans may not love him because of his decision to play for the U.S. national team.

Despite the strained relationship with his Italian fans, Banchero has affection for them. Banchero continues to hold affection for them. During the recent interview, he conveyed his intentions to regain their support and admiration.

“I hope the relationship between us can be rebuilt. Obviously, I know there was some bad blood between us after my decision to play in the World Cup for the USA. We played against Italy and I heard some boos and things like that, so I know how the Italian fans feel about me, and I hope that one day we can recover. I am still on good terms with the coach and some of the players,” Banchero said.

Banchero is making significant contributions for the Magic in the 2025-26 NBA season. He is currently averaging 20.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, and five assists per game for the team.
