Paolo Banchero scores big in another Magic loss

Paolo Banchero scored 36 points Tuesday night, the third time he scored 30+ points in his last five games. And for the sixth straight game, the Orlando Magic lost.

The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Magic, 136-131, as Donovan Mitchell scored 42 points and the Cavs shot 60 percent from the field. The Magic dropped into a tie for 10th place and have now given up 264 points in their last two games.

Paolo Banchero's big scoring nights aren't always good for his team

Orlando fell to 6-6 in games where Banchero scores 30 or more points. He put up 75 points across two games that ended up as losses because the team's defense collapsed, but also because his teammates didn't give him a lot of help.

The Magic have a long injured list, with starters Jalen Suggs and Franz Wagner out, along with reserves Anthony Black and Jonathan Isaac. Banchero's taking on a large offensive role for a team lacking scoring, but he also has nearly as many turnovers (10) as assists (11) in the last two games.

Banchero has been scoring in bunches, but the combination of his mediocre assist-to-turnover ratio and his subpar three-point shooting (31.7 percent) can mean that a Banchero-centric offense may have limited efficiency. Even as Orlando made a desperate comeback to get within three points in the final minute, Banchero often scored dribbling into double coverage.

Orlando Magic's defense has slipped in recent games

One reason Orlando has needed Banchero's scoring heroics — he became the first Magic forward to score 35 or more points in consecutive games — is that their defense hasn't been able to stop anyone. Not only did the Cavaliers make 60 percent of their shots, they were a scorching 72.4 percent on two-point shots, even with starting center Jarrett Allen out.

Mitchell made 14 shots in the game and 10 of them came within seven feet of the hoop, including a floater with 14 seconds to play that sealed the win for Cleveland.

Orlando needs to fix its defense because Banchero can't keep getting into scoring duels with the opposing team's best player every night. The All-Star forward's statistics have been impressive, but the win-loss record shows Banchero's big scoring nights aren't helping his team get close wins.
