Before signing up with the Philadelphia 76ers, All-Star wing Paul George was heavily rumored to be traded to the Golden State Warriors. Just recently, though, the former Los Angeles Clippers star has shed light on why the proposed trade never materialized.
A couple of weeks ago, the Warriors believed they were on the verge of completing a trade to acquire George from the Clippers. It was reported that the All-Star had indicated his desire to join the Dubs, and the team was confident that their stars, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, were fully on board with the potential acquisition.
The Warriors reportedly had prepared to offer George a max contract for the next four seasons and had presented the Clippers with several trade configurations that they deemed satisfactory. However, the Clippers ultimately did not accept any of the Warriors’ proposed deals, and the trade never materialized.
Golden State’s front office was caught off guard by the Clippers’ decision to not accept their trade offers, as they were under the impression that they were close to securing George’s services. The failure to land the All-Star wing is a significant disappointment for GSW as the team was hoping to bolster their roster and make a strong push for the championship next season.
Just recently, George came out with a special episode of his podcast on YouTube. In it, he detailed his side in the failed trade that would have paired him with Curry, Green, and potentially, All-Star shooter Klay Thompson.
““That was a real thing that was close to being done. That deal was close to being done from what I was being told on the situation, they was expressing just how much they wanted me there, how I could have fit in perfectly with Draymond [Green], Steph [Curry]. Klay [Thompson] probably would’ve stayed. [Brandin] Podziemski, [Jonathan] Kuminga, [Andrew] Wiggins.
They didn’t know how or what package was going to be there to trade for me…[Kevon] Looney was going to be there and so it was very intriguing and it was still an opportunity to stay close to home, stay on the West Coast, and it was a win-win. I think Steph is a unicorn, one of one player, and Joel’s a unicorn…So it was kind of like a good situation to be in the middle of, but ultimately the deal didn’t go through.
I think Clippers didn’t want a certain trade deal that Warriors were willing to give and yeah, it just didn’t happen but it was close. It’d been dope, man. I was looking forward to it, if it happened,” George said.
If that move succeeded, George would have created a formidable core with Curry, Green, and other pieces Golden State currently has. Even if they traded Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks, the nine-time All-Star was an improvement due to his elite production on both ends of the court.
However, reality has set in and George will get to play with Embiid and Maxey in Philadelphia. Hopefully, he gets to have a better time there than the five years George played in Los Angeles after enduring several years of disappointing playoff campaigns.
