LeBron James made his highly anticipated season debut against the Utah Jazz on November 18.

LeBron James missed the Los Angeles Lakers’ first 14 games with a sciatica injury as this marked the first time he started a season on the sidelines.

In his return, James did show some early rust scoring 0 points in the first quarter, but then he settled in, finishing with 11 points and 12 assists in 30 minutes.

The one thing that did look noticeably different with James back in the lineup was his role. The Lakers weren’t dependent on James, with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves leading the way.

Paul Pierce doesn’t know if LeBron James can take a back seat with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves

Throughout James’ illustrious 23-year career he has never played second fiddle to anyone.

What Kobe Bryant said about LeBron James

I think the player that would fit with me most, that would actually be LeBron.

He’s a passer first, I’m a scorer, I’m a finisher. ‘Bron is a facilitator by nature and I’m a finisher by nature.

Those two styles, I think complement each other extremely well.

He has always been the main focal point of a team and teams have been built around him.

However, for the first time in his career, James finds himself in a situation where he is not the main option and he needs to adjust his role to fit in.

Paul Pierce, who had many epic battles with James during his career, doesn’t know if James can fall in line with Doncic and Reaves taking the reins.

“Listen, we’ve never seen him fit in, right? So now after all these years how do we know?

“This is a role he’s never played in his life. Usually, LeBron is a guy that you got to adjust your talents around him, where this is the first time in his career where you legitimately got to say he got a fall in line with what Luka’s doing and Reaves is doing.

“So I’m just questioning if he can do it.

“LeBron ain’t coming here to get 11 points.”

LeBron James must accept that he is the Los Angeles Lakers’ third option now

For the Lakers to have success this season, James must accept his role and take a back seat.

As a result, James’ All-Star streak could come to an end at 21 seasons.

In the Lakers’ hierarchy it should be: Doncic, Reaves and then James, who can still make a major impact with less on his plate.

If James embraces his new role and Doncic and Reaves continue to play well, the Lakers could contend for the title this season.
